If my husband is working in Tseung Kwan O and I will be working in Shatin/Tai Po area and commuting with our children, what do you think our best option for housing is? We may need to buy a car, but we don't want to buy two. Any thoughts? We have two children and would like to manage on under 12,000 HKD monthly rental.

Yesterday you were asking about Aberdeen - I hope you have a map of HK to know that these 3 places are miles apart!
TKO MTR station to Sha Tin is about 25-30 mins with 2 line changes (Tiu Keng Leng and Kowloon Tong).
$12000 may get you part of a village house. There are plenty around TKO area and Tai Wai/Shatin.
If your children are in school, in terms of transportation, it may be better to find a place near their school.
A search of the Property and Parenting Advice forums would give you some ideas about housing estates, schools, etc.

Despite whats mentioned above you will not need to slum it! Sai Kung sounds like a good place for you guys, your husband can commute on bus to TKO and you can drive up to Sha Tin. There are many villages just outside Sai Kung and your budget will get you a floor of a decent village house. Village houses are available in Tai Po, Sha Tin and also TKO. If you want to live in an apartment block then it's doable but it will be an older building which is not so bad if it's in good condition.
