Please can anyone advise what the going rate is in Hong Kong for part time office work. This would be for someone experienced and returning to work after maternity. Also is it normal to be paid an hourly rate or a monthly salary?
I would be grateful for any advice.
Thanks

Well normally if you are doing part time work in an office for a multinational corporation, you would probably negotiate a monthly salary based on an hourly rate, though to be honest I haven't heard of too many people doing part time work for those kind of companies. My ex girlfriend worked part time for Cathay Pacific, she was paid on a monthly basis but her renumeration was hourly, so depending on how many hours she did in a particular month she would receive wages at the end of the month accordingly. As for the rate you may receive, it really depends on what you are doing, its impossible to say without knowing.

Thanks Digital Blonde (great name!). The type of work would be administrative/secretarial. Any ideas on rates or where I could find out?
Cheers

Have you contacted Adecco, Top Secretary, Links etc.? They should be able to give you an indication of what their temps/contract workers etc. are pocketing (that is, after the agency cut). You might have to go through the motions of registering with them, but I would have thought they might provide you with some idea of salary without forcing you to (?)

well it really depends on who ends up being your employer, I mean its not unheard of for secretarial or adminstrative staff making up to US$100,000 PA full time including bonus if they are working on the right desk or for the right person at an investment bank, at more modest companies a full time adminstrator could make US$15,00-25,000 per annum
I had a look at some part time jobs, on a website and one job was offered by the government which was paying HK$10,000 per month or HK$60 per hour if it is part time, there are plenty of other part time jobs available on that website though
Here is the website i went to
http://hongkong.recruit.net/search.html?query=part+time++OR+receptionist&location=&postdate=30&hitsPerPage=10&totalPages=50&dedup=true&sortby=relevance&pageNo=2&f_company=
and here is the govt job I saw which stated salaries

better still, take a look at this opening with Watson Wyatt, Im sure they will pay well

Ultimately I would talk to the temping agencies like manpower and addecco, they will be able to educate you better than I could and I hope you speak cantonese as well as your english proficiency, if you dont then it might make getting a job more difficult.
talk to the temping agencies first, see what they say, if you need more help, you can either pm me or you can respond on this thread
Cheers
