Waikiki Beach, Honolulu

Thinking of going there in early July with a six-year-old. Two questions:

1. Which is the most child-friendly hotel along the beach? We are looking at the Hilton Hawaiian Village - should be the right choice insofar as the kid is concerned?

2. Are the waters around the Waikiki Beach area (near the HHV) safe for a bit of swimming and snorkelling for a six-year-old who can swim a little? He will be supervised of course. What I am concerned about are things like high surf, rough waters or sudden drop-offs too close to the shoreline.

Thanks for any ideas.

There are tons of hotels in Waikiki, though most are not beachfront. You'll pay top dollar for those that are. As for the beach, it has a large swimming area roped off with a breakwater wall and is very safe. There really isn't much to see for snorkleing though. You could go to Hanama Bay for snorkleing as there is much more to see there and it is fairly easy to snorkle there.
