I have narrowed my choices down to 2 laptops, Dell and Lenovo models and would like to ask everyone's view on the suppotr/service provided by these companies.

I have herd Lenovo's service in HK is fantastic, no idea about Dell.

If you have first hand experience to add and/or contradict the above, please let me know!

Many thanks!

LEnovo all the way. It's a matter of clientele. Thinkpads are mostly built for the business market. Dells are mostly built for private buyers. The quality requirements are quite different. Having worked for IBM (pre-Lenovo) in my opinion the component quality is higher in Thinkpads. Ok, maybe I'm biased. ;)

I have had 11 Thinkpads and 1 Dell. The Dell worked but it just didn't feel as well put together. Also the included software (wireless etc) in the Dell was pretty basic. Just Access Connections makes the Thinkpad a good choice. I would deffo research and if possible test drive the included software. Makes a huge difference.

Having said all that, you're just buying the one. If you bought, say, 200 of each, you would get a good statistical breakdown. With just one you could end up with the Dell that never breaks of the Thinkpad that was put together by two one-armed blind orangutans.

I have always had a great experience with Lenovo service. Responsive and fast. This was in the US mind you. But I would still rather never send it to service so I would be on the TP.

May the Force be with you.

Hi thanks for the information. I use a TP at work so I am really familiar with it too, but it doesn't have the fun stuff like built-in webcam and other frivolous multimedia gadgets that one wants for home use...I am looking at the Dell XPS range and they are pretty cool.

That said service and reliability is more important and I would agree that it is totally dependable. I have no experience with the service as my work IT guys handle everything, so that's good to know.

Still not decided, doesn't help that I know nothing about these things so am making decisions based on hearsay and hardsell from sales people...

Thanks again.

Certainly the XPS is above and beyond your plain vanilla Dell. Better components and finish. Nice machines. Pretty much gaming oriented though, so it depends what you are going to do with it.

Lenovo has no equivalent. Their top machines are more graphical workstation oriented. Certainly no problem running games but it's a different target market.
