Kindermusik or an alternative?

Hi, I'm thinking of enrolling in a Kindermusik class with my 7-month-old--just to have something fun to do with her.

Anyone who's experienced Kindermusik: what did you think? Alternatively, are there other classes/programmes that anyone would suggest instead? Basically, I'd just like to have one structured activity a week--for my baby to have fun with other babies, for me to meet other parents, and to lighten the entertainment burden for at least an hour! Thanks for any tips/ideas you can share.

Thanks, Joshmomm! Guess what? I went ahead and signed up for PEKIP--first class will be this Saturday. I checked out the website on your recommendation and it certainly does sound interesting. Also, the timeslots work well given my work schedule. Many thanks.

Would still love to get a sense of what other classes/programmes are like...so, others, do feel free to chime in. Thanks as always!

hi, for what it is worth - did not like Kindermusik at all - neither did my babies -then about 12 months - so did not continue this term - switched to Music Together instead - much better.

We attend Music Together at Hong Lok Yuen club in Tai Po and you don't need to be a member of the club to join.

I think there are also classes in Tung Chung and Tuen Mun.

Hi Happychick, do you hv contact for the one in Hong Lok Yuen? We live in Fanling so it is a good spot for us to go to. I checked their website but the contacts there shown one on HK Island side and one in Tuen Mun. None listed for Hong Lok Yuen. My daughter is 4 and half. May be it is too old, u think?

Hi Mighty, the Music Together program used at HLY is Just Juniors and I think they only go up to 4yrs old.

Here is the website: http://www.justjuniors.com/index.html There is a contact number for you to call for more info.

Carla, who takes the lessons at HLY is fantastic and I'm sure she'll be able to give you more info on other Music Together programs they have for older children within the area.

This is her email: office@justjuniors.com

We do Kindermusik here in Beijing with my 1 and 2 year old. They LOVE it. After 2 classes my 2 year old was singing some of the songs, and after 3 classes my 1 year old started to know what to do with the instruments and when to put her hands in the air, etc...

To be honest, my 2 year old gets more out of it than my 1 year old. So if I were choosing what to do with a 7 month old, I would go for PEKIP, swimming and baby signing.... and start music later.

But saying that, I think any music/movement/motion class is great, especially if they have enough programmes to last a few years so your child can develop with it.

Also, I agree with JoshMom on PeKip - EXCELLENT, especially for that young age.

Also, baby swimming I would do, and baby signing too - those both have major benefits when you start young and continue as they develop.

I'm going to be a contrarian here and just note that before 18-24 months, there really isn't any developmental need for an organized activity like this. Before 18-24 month playdates aren't really that meaningful either.

Of course, if you think it's fun and your child does too, by all means. But don't feel compelled to do stuff.

Axptguy, I totally agree it's not necessary--but I find it *so* relaxing to have at least one hour of the week when someone else is in charge, i.e. giving me ideas of what to do with the baby. So yes I guess it's more for the parents than the baby! : )

I agree it is all about getting the kid out of the house really! Tho, i would not do swimming, to expensive and no result until well after 3 yrs old - just take the baby to the pool yourself without paying unnecessary fortune.
