I have an HDTV, but ordinary service with NOW TV. I am pretty thoroughly disappointed with the programing and quality on Now TV, but I was told that if I upgrade to HDTV, even the ordinary signal channels will look better. This of course won't make up for poor programming, but at least I would be able to see Risky Business and my other 80's favs in better quality. Anyone have any opinions?

NOW has several channels that are shown in HD quality. But you need to upgrae your subscription to them.

This is technically untrue. In regards to the local channels, you would need to get some type of reciever to get the digital signals. This is of course, assuming that your building has already installed its digital satellite thing. I forgot what you call it.
In any case, I only use my HDTV for gaming. Using it to watch normal channels makes the picture look like VCD's (not all). =)

I would say that HDTV service is only worth it if you watch lots of new shows produced and transmitted in HD. I doubt the 80s stuff will be better since it wasn't produced in HD.

I have it set to "true aspect ratio". While the 4:3 stuff leaves bars on the sides at least it's not distorted. The pixel interpolation to smear it out over the bigger resolution is typically not an issue to my untrained eyes.

Depends on your set. We have a 50'' plasma and an analogue signal on that looks likesh*te. Put on HD or a DVD and you really see the difference...no need to go to the cinema ever again!
If you have a smaller screen or a picture tube TV, it's not meant to be soooo much better, only a little.
