How to dispose of empty batteries ?

Here here. I've got the same question! Or problem. In some European countries they have boxes on posts on streets. I have two used batteries sitting here for ages now but I just couldn't bear dumping them with other rubbish. Since HSBC has been talking green, i wonder if they'll have a solution. ...Of course not!

Please correct me if I am wrong here. As far as I know the dangerous things in batteries were the Mercury and Cadmium which today you can see that they are absent from all good batteries which what I understood meant that they can be disposed in the normal bin. However, these are still in the rechargeble ones ie, of mobile phone. I know that in McDonalds they have boxes for them and it says specifically - only those rechargeble batteries.

Again please correct me if I wrong.

I have no idea about the other substances :s

Always assumed that since the boxes for all type of batteries were gone and then only those for rechargeble batteries appeared and then also the notes on the batteries saying "0% Mercury and Cadmium added", that now it's was ok to put them in the bin. Maybe someone can enlighten us on that topic?

OK, I found this site to say that Alkaline batteries are fine to throw in normal bin.

I remember a year ago or so they 'discovered' that a big factory making batteries in Guangdong used lots of cadmium so muc h so that the factory workers had and of course still have cadmium poisoning.

Of course these are batteries that are sold around the world!

I have't heard the very ungreen HK gov talk about batteries or even encourage reusable ones (by financing or other means) - if this is environmentally friendlier (need scientific input here). But then HK gov officials used to be administration people, not experts of any kind at all.

Can anyone help?
