Anybody out there have any thoughts on using the iphone in HKG - good or bad?
I am keen to get one of the 16G ones but have heard some very conflicting reports - from it has frozen up completly, to it's a dream, to you can't get a decent data/sim package!
Anybody recommend some stores doing good deals?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

could you post the exact name of the lane near timesquare to get the iphone?
also @4k HKD is at a locked or unlocked one?

Wouldn't a locked one be a bit pointless in HK right now?

If you didn't notice, the new version of the iPhone has been launched. 3G and GPS included, as expected. My guess is we'll be seeing it in an "official" capacity in HK by August.

It's now official: This from the Hutchison Media Machine.
Summing it up - iPhone 3G in HK 11/July
Hong Kong, 10th June 2008 - Hutchison Telecommunications International Limited (“Hutchison Telecom”; SEHK:2332; NYSE: HTX) and Apple today announced that the highly anticipated iPhone™ 3G will be available in Hong Kong on July 11, and in Macau shortly thereafter. iPhone™ 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone™ with 3G networking that is twice as fast* as the first generation iPhone™, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone™ 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone™ SDK.

And the price will be as stated by Apple, 7.8*199=~1600hkd?
Please support our advertisers:
Unless I'm mistaken $199 assumes the AT&T subscription. This would probably be the case in HK as well. In other words a "locked" price.

aptxguy is correct, the price point is dependent upon contract. So it will be locked - and only available to subscribers to 3. This makes sense as many consumers will happily sign up to 3 in order to obtain the latest shiney thing! Besides, 3 have piad substantial amount to secure sole distributor status. The assumption is: Demand for the product is so strong that it outwieghs limited carrier options.
This is a typical, and smart, Apple move; they lock down proprietary distribution of their products but adopt an open source policy on software development and add ons. The recently released SDK for iPhone is an example of this.
That said, anything that is locked can be unlocked - and I'm sure we'll see examples of that VERY soon after the launch - if not rumours before!
I imagine that Nokia et al are already sweating and getting out the slide rule to determine minimum profit margins as the bright shiney status of the iPhone should not be understated. If it's introduced at the USD199 level with a contract - looking in the 3 store yesterday - there's not much in that price range that would challenge iPhone. But, this being HK, I'm dubious if even Apple's firm worldwide pricing poicy will hold out here. I wouldn't be surprised to see anything from 2-3k for it (or more), even on a contract. The market is just too overpriced and I know other manufactureres will be pressuring for more parity in pricing.

Indeed true. However TCO should be calculated. The big question is how much 3 will charge for data. If the data charges are high the whole the low price thing is only small part of the total cost.

Apple tends to be very strict on this. 3 could lose the rights if they break the price clause.

The price would probably stay at the uniform $199 USD but data charges with 3 are terrible. And no one is going to get an iPhone 3G and not download! Was at the 3 store today and they seem to have no info on pricing/packages. Guessing it'll all come out together with the phone on July 11th.
Aside from the prospect of facing a $1000 bill every month for extra downloads, I don't see anything keeping hk folk back from the new iPhone. What's the bet Apple has already negotiated an unlimited downloads deal with the carriers?
