I knew this was coming to effect but wasn't really sure how it was going to affect us until today.

I've just found out, thanks to 360, that soy milk, items labelled 'omega 3', and other generally healthy stuff that doesn't fir in with the HK labelling laws will be banned as from May 29th.

This is just ridiculous!!!!!

Yes ban the stuff that has chemicals added, stuff that claims to do something it clearlt can't, BUT don't ban food items that are good for us.

360 has a petition that people can sign, is their an online one anywhere!

Is the problem it labeling laws that forbid certain ingredients, or is there a way to label these products correctly?

If it's the latter, plenty of countries have similar regulations. The onus really is on the producers to label in accordance to the law if they want to sell their products.

How long has this law been in the works? If it's a long time I would put the blame squarely on the manufacturers. Lots of countries have different labeling requirements.

I don't truly trust these monopolistic supermarkets. They have signs in and around their shops informing us that product 'A' might be taken off the shelves due to the new labelling laws. They are also asking us to sign a petition. So many of these products are from Australia and Australia has some very strict labelling laws. There must be another reason why these supermarkets are threatening to take these products off the shelf.

If the products do not have the 'correct' label, how easy would it be to have a label (sticker) placed on these products? Many Chinese products already have stickers applied to them, so a new sticker with then new labelling guidelines is not out of the question.

These supermarkets must have another reason, could it be to put pressure on their suppliers to lower the wholesale price or face having their products removed under the guise of the new labelling laws?

Why HP sauce? It makes no claims that fit into the proposed labeling laws!

The law will require that for any claim to be made (low fat, sugar free, etc) there will have to have been a test done in Hong Kong, which is expensive and many manufacturers in the west, where products carry many health claims, won't bother paying for the testing for such a small market. So supermarkets will either have to cover the label or stop selling the product. The new law will also have a positive effect in that companies won't be able to make bogus claims, say from China or something. But the petition in the stores is asking for an exemption from the law for products of which imports are fewer than 30,000 per year, such as the gluten free crackers or omega-rich beans or low-fat organic cheese we have come to love. At the very least, the new law will cause the prices of these odd speciality products to rise. Legco votes on it 28 May, I think.

I bought a frozen sheppard pie yesterday from Park'n Shop. Guess what?

There was a label on the back of the packet stating that the product was exempt from as food label as the package already had the nutritional facts printed on it. To make things worse the exemption label was placed over the cooking instructions. I did not realise this until I got home. Now isn't that realy stupid
