VAT- UK

ORIGINAL POST

Hi there,

I recently purchased a product from the UK. It was paid by a HK credit card/ billing address and sent to HK. I noticed that the VAT is 50gbp- no small amount. Is there anyway to get this money back? I know how to get a VAT refund at overseas airports, but not sure how to go about it when I am in HK. Thanks!

I would start discussing the matter with the seller. He should not have charged you VAT in the first place. A number of people are not aware of that and always automatically charge VAT. Ask him/her friendly whether he/she would consider re-imbursing you directly. It doesn't cost the seller a thing (except for maybe some credit card charges) because the seller is merely a sort of withholding agent. It worked for me a couple of times.

Alternatively, I would check with the British consulate. They shuold know what to do - but you usually do not get back 100% of the paid VAT as you will have to pay "admin-charges" (at least thats what you have to do with the AUS and German authorities).

Good luck

thanks for this- exactly what I needed to know. I actually couldn't find good info on this on the internet, which I thought is a bit strange.
