DIY Relocation

We will be moving from HK to Brisbane in June. Since this is a private move, cost is an issue. Has anyone done a large move (40 foot container) on a DIY basis? I.e. pack yourself, get a transport company to move stuff to container at port and engage a customs clearer in Brisbane? I've heard someone do it in Asia expat thread, but he has not provided any companies. Would appreciate advice here, particularly previous experience and names of companies that can help. I've got loads of time to organize this. I'm trying to avoid the big removalists for now, as the costs are high - HKD 80 -100K.

Thanks.

I would recommend that you don't pack yourself. For customs reasons, you should let the shipper pack both boxes and container. They know what needs to be done and what shouldn't. You'll save yourself potential hassles with customs clearance.

Quite frankly that sounds like a fair price for the kind of move you are looking at. A company like Santa Fe does give you what you pay for in my opinion.

We have moved "DIY" from London to Connecticut. In the end it came to about 12k US, so well within your range.

Thanks. Good to know that the costs are in the ball park.
