I got some helpful suggestions to an earlier questions I'd posted about where to find white plates, for which I thank you!
However, whilst the shops sold all sorts of plates, of which some were almost exactly what I was after, I would like to buy ones that aren't so heavy or chunky. I'd need to have the strength of a hod carrier to take more than one of the standard dinner plates I liked to the table, so my new question is:
Has anyone seen large plain white dinner plates on sale anywhere? Round or square. Maxwell (?) plates are again too heavy, I'd prefer nicer ones than those I saw in IKEA, and I've also tried Sogo and some shops in Prince's Building but can't justify or afford Villeroy & Boch prices.
I'm always spotting crockery I want in hotels - if shops don't stock the plates I like, is there anyone out there in the catering trade who can point me in the direction of someone who could sell them to me? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Why don't you try the area in Mongkok that has all of the catering trade shops - not sure exactly how to get there but I remember that there is a cinema nearby and also the MTR station is close too. Sorry I am not able to be more specific about location or exit for the mtr.

Many thanks for the suggestions. I'm not sure whether it was Elgin or Staunton Street where the shop was I recently tried. (Nice Chinese lady; floor piled high with white crockery.) It has a huge selection, but all of the plates were a bit too thick and were sort of platter-weight. And Shanghai Street and environs, Zone etc. all sell heavy chunky stuff too. I suppose I'm probably looking for bone china if that's the only way to get a thinner plate, but the bone china sets I've seen here have been high-end European imported brand prices. Maybe a little buying trip to Bangkok is beckoning...

If you want the lighter weight of bone china take a trip to the Homewares stores in outer Shenzhen. There are at least two stores I know of in that shopping complex (of about 4 buildings) and I have bought lovely white bone china there. Large dinner plates down to pedestal cake plates. Very cheap as it is wholesale prices.
I do not have the address right now but if you would like it I can find and post.

Here is the address.
Porcelain Crafts Export Market, Building 811, Meiyuan Road, Shungang Warehouse, Shenzhen Tel:0755-2473565
There are 4 buildings at this location. You need to look through the two buildings at the front which face the main road. This particular shop is at the front of one of the buildings and to your left when you walk in through the front entrance.
They have restuarant weight porcelain as well as the heavier type. All shapes and sizes, bowls, plates, cups, mugs, tea cups, coffee cups etc etc. Some you have to order other they have in stock.
In the same building and on the same floor but back towards the centre and close to an exit to the side of the building is another place with more whiteware.
Probably more throughout the building/s but these two shops are where my friends and I have shopped.
Remember they do not like taking HK $ anymore so take RMB with you.
Happy hunting.
