Duck pancakes??

ORIGINAL POST

When I moved to Hong Kong from London three months ago, I envisaged myself eating crispy duck pancakes, China's greatest gift to the world, every other day. I get here and find out that it's a Beijing thing and no restaurants seem to serve them. Is there a good Beijingese (?) place on the island where I can get duck pancakes?

Don't be surprised that the duck comes sliced and not shredded like you get in the UK - you still get all the pancakes and sauces with it though.

I've not found one that does it shredded.

Also, if you don't fancy the windowless Peking Garden, there's a Jade Garden (same chain I think) in Star House that does the duck (sliced), which is worth a visit after the Lightshow at 8pm (good for guests). You can book a table in the window if you have a big enough group and you may get to see the noodle making demo while you eat!

AimeeJ - thanks, you are a day late though! I went to Peking Garden last night, and as you say, the duck was sliced rather than shredded. Also it was $360 for the whole duck - no half or quarter on offer (although they let me take half of it home). Not a criticism per se, the sliced duck at Peking Garden in Central is technically superior to the crispy duck pancakes at Shanghai Surprise in Peckham, but it didn't quite scratch the itch.

I read in TimeOut HK about a new place in Wan Chai that models itself on "Chinatown" cuisine, maybe they serve some proper Westernised duck pancakes! ;)

Crispy Duck is an English phenomenon!!! It is deep fried duck rubbed with five spice powder. Yes it tastes great but you are unlikely to find it here!

As other posts have said - you will find the more traditional peking duck here (Peking garden and a place just above Watsons in Jordan- sorry forgotten the name!) and that tastes great. If you want crispy duck, you will have to wait to go back to the UK!!!

Oh no!! A gap in the market, clearly...'

my friends in the UK will be surprised when I go back for Xmas... "What do want while you're back - a pint of bitter? Roast dinner? Pork scratchings?" "No, crispy duck pancakes..."
