hi! im from the Philippines. i fell in live with your place when i had my vacation in HK just recently, so i'm thinking of pursuing a masters degree in engineering there. what universities should i check out? also, will it be hard for a prospective non-local student to get in? are the admissions very selective? i earned my degree in civil eng'g at one of the top universities in my country. any input is very much appreciated. thanks!

HKU, Science & Technology, Polytechnic are all good options. You can find details of their programmes and requirements for entry on their websites. All of them note requirements for international ..... about 10% at some of the universities. There are some scholarships for international but not tons.

Admission is not too difficult if you are going for a MEng degree. However, it can be really hard to get admitted to research degree programmes (MPhil), because all research students (including international ones) receive financial assistance from the universities - around 12-13K HK$ per month. So naturally there is a lot of competition for admission. If you plan to become a research student, I recommend to get in touch with some professors first and build connections.

English is totally sufficient, because it is the official language of all Hong Kong universities - even Chinese University despite its name. At Chinese University, some courses related to Chinese language, arts, history, and culture are taught in Chinese, but all science and engineering subjects are in English. And by the way, since you are from a non-English speaking country, you'll probably have to take the TOEFL or IELTS test and obtain a certain minimum result to get admitted.

I believe places for Mainland Chinese students will be reviewed given how they have behaved recently especially during the torch relay in HK (and Korea). They are becomign the world's newest terrorists.

merm, isn't that a bit simplistic? Pretty sure most students were excited about the torch relay.

As for "terrorists", I would say they were "activists" at best.
