With solitaire diamonds, which do you prefer? Are the 4 C's more important than the size? Would you rather have a large stone with less qualities or a smaller one which sparkles more? If you had a limit budget-wise, which would you choose? I'm looking at upgrading my engagement ring and am thinking along the lines of getting a larger stone (solitaire) with perhaps less qualities because my current engagement ring is quite small, but is a lovely stone and shows lots of colours. A larger stone may not have the quality of smaller ones but at the end of the day, it's still a diamond. But on the other hand a large stone with not much sparkle....Sigh... Just wondering what your preferences are. Cheers!

Smaller one with a better quality is MUCH better! A GF of mine got a large stone with no sparkle, she hates it...a diamond ISN'T a diamond if it LOOKS like a bad cubic zirconia!

Agree completely with Rachael.
If you get a bad quality diamond, people will simply think it is an immitation & that will just make your other half look cheap for getting it for you (even you buy/upgrade it urself)

I can't understand why people upgrade their engagement rings! It takes the sentimental value out of the whole concept!
I do agree that quality is better than size. Although, many people have no clue about quality and just look at the size of the carat.

I'm upgrading mine because I LOVE diamonds and seeing as how life is short, I'd like (and my husband would most certainly like me) to have a nice-sized diamond. For me it most certainly doesn't take the sentimental value away. Anyway, I would never purchase a huge rock with no sparkle. I'd just like to have a larger diamond than my engagement ring that's all.

You obviously LOVE diamonds, but to me, your wanting to 'upgrade' your engagement ring is basically like saying that what your husband bought is simply not good enough for you. He may say that he most certainly wants you to have a bigger diamond ... but is that what he really feels deep down? ... I think my husband would feel upset that I wasn't happy with what he worked hard to pay for. Even though he could now afford a much more expensive ring I wouldn't dream of changing the one I already have. But I suppose some people have different priorites.

I think you should keep the engagement ring for sentimental reason and buy a new one which you like and can afford. Problem solved.

Never in a hundred years would I give up my engagement ring! As I said, I would love a large diamond from my husband. What's wrong with that? Different story if he wasn't happy about the whole idea, but as it happens, he would like me to have a larger diamond because it would make me happy, not that my engagement ring doesn't make me happy, I LOVE it!
Cara, I think you misunderstood me. OF COURSE I love the people around me. My husband and I have a brilliant relationship. I not a particularly material person. A lot of things don't matter to me. My husband is ALWAYS telling me to go out and buy things, like new clothes etc, but as I don't need new clothes I'm not just going to go out and buy some for the hell of it. He also has been going on and on at me about buying a new watch. I have two (one of which needs new batteries!), but I can't see the point of having THREE watches! So I think the fact I would love ONE diamond ring isn't that much to ask, seeing as how I've sacrificed quite a lot in my life (to my husband's advantage), so I think you (and the rest of the respondents of my thread) are being rather judgemental particularly when you don't know me or my husband.

The solitaire has been the most sought after when it comes to wedding rings. Diamonds are known to be a girl's best friend and hence, the more the better. Rings with three stones are very popular and look pretty elegant.
