- If you're an expat, you never know where you will end up. So ensure it runs on both 110-120 and 220-240. Just read on the power brick. It should say "Input: 110-240 AC" or something like that.
- Buy a travel power adapter so you can plug it in anywhere. An aircraft adapter is a nice thing too since many aircraft have seat power nowadays (3 kinds: "normal" AC, EmPower and car plug). Check seatguru.com to see if your flight has plugs.
- Ensure it is region free. The salesman should tell you how to set it to region free if it is not.
- I prefer "name" brands like Sony or Toshiba. Typically you do get what you pay for in terms of product and warranty.
- Battery life should be at least 5-6 hours. Manufacturers are often a bit optimistic in their claims.
- Fortress probably has one.
- It goes without saying, but give it a good test before leaving.
- Output outlets and cables so you can plug it to, say, a hotel TV are a nice extra. Some players include these.
- Some players have turnable screens so you can watch them in "laptop" mode (screen standing up) or "tablet" mode (screen flat against unit). That can be a nice feature if you don't have a table to put it on.

smsm- we have a phillips one (well 2 actually, one per kid, how bad is that) from Fortress - we really likes that it is just the screen (the slot for the DVD is on the side) - i.e no stand - very compact - not like a pc... not very technical, all I remember that it is Phillips, comes with brackets for the car (that's where we use ours mostly) and a little stand to prop it up, it is white, cant remember price, sorry!
