Is there a cheap way of calling in UK or Australia, or other countries for that manner, using my mobile.
I am travelling early next week so if it is quick to set up that would suit me best. I recently went to Australia and my mobile bill ended up being $1800. Don't wont that to happen again.
cheers

Just buy a prepaid card when you get to Australia. The sim card is same etc, so there won't be a problem with using your actual mobile. Go to a telstra or vodafone shop or any of those places. There will be shops at the airport that you will be able to pick them up from.
We actually do it over here for when our family visits, so they can sms and call home to Australia cheaply.

If you use roaming service there is no choice. Just saw a programme about expensive roaming charges on Skynews. This is how those big giants get their money. The cost is irrelevant to technical issues so it is completely overcharged. Is it possible for you to buy a simcard when you re in UK or Australia? Or I heard there are mobile rental services in some countries but I am not sure about UK etc.

What about getting a simcard in the UK ? I personnally use a Virgin one, which i only top with 5-10 pounds, to sms/call people in the UK at a "normal cost" and to be called without additional cost (even receiving calls on your HK mobile will be charged to you... the expensive way, of course). Of course, i guess other UK phone company can provide you similar services.
Another way (still to be investigated) is to check whether skypephones work over there....
