We want to NOT live in a high rise, but have a bit of nature around us. My sweetheart will be working in Maonshan and me in Taipo. Suggestions? We also want something bigger than 700 square feet!
Thanks for any input.

It all depends on your budget la... from a local point of view :- Villages like Lam Tsuen Chuen, Tai Hang, Lam Wah Po, Yuen Leng - they all have mini buses or big buses going to Tai Po Station to catch the train. Mountains around these villages. Bigger than 700 sq. ft. - yes get 2 floors or ground floor with garden. Quite a few nowadays are duplex design. Hong Lok Yuen of course is a good choice. Good luck on yr house hunt.

Sorry 2 mistakes : I meant Lam Tsuen and mini buses/big buses going to Tai Wo Station.

I'd second IslandHopper. Tai Wai ideal for both Ma On Shan and East Rail lines. What's your budget?

Yes Tai Wai is definitely a very convenient spot. Two concerns : (1) more expensive than villages around Tai Wo / Fanling areas (2) houses are closer to each other compared to Tai Po

did you know there's a mini-bus that joins ma on shan and tai po? we've lived in ma on shan before and it has great infrastructure (shops, doctors, pool etc). there's village houses nearby for space and sai kung (beaches, national park) is just down the road on the 299.

Agreed, although that's the price you pay for convenience! Being on top of the MTR with bus links to the whole of HK does that to prices. For villages avoid Tin Sam, no greenery there and Tai Wai Village, very old and no space. Same for Tong Lo Wan, to close to the new roads with more being built.
San Tin is nice but very hard to rent there, Kak Tin is big with quite a few expats, Tai Wai New Village has space. Heung Fan Liu is quite quiet although would need a minibus to get to station, San Tai Wai Village is small but close to both Tai Wai and Che Kung Temple stations.
If your budget is high enough you could look at a low density area such as Lakeview Garden which fits greenery and personal space (smallest apartment is around 1280sq/ft).

Look in the villages in Tai Po along Ting Kok Road - there are quite a few going towards Tai Mei Tuk with 2 and 3 level houes. You can take a minibus or even ride your bike to Tai Po city in 10-15 minutes and catch the minibus or train to Ma On Shan.
Tai Po is fantastic place to live - housing is an excellent value and lots of greenery and sea views. Water sports facilities in Tai Mei Tuk and bike and hiking trails all along Ting Kok Road and Brides Pool area plus Tai Po Waterfront Park is great for kids. Tai Po itself has a Park N' Shop Superstore and Jusco and prices in the local shops are less expensive than other areas of HK. If you want to be around expats, then Tai Mei Tuk area is probably better but is also further away from Tai Po city.
