I want to buy a box of matches to light my gas oven. Supermarkets don't sell them, and a hunt through Causeway Bay market didn't turn any up. Any suggestions? Thanks.

instead of matches, have you thought about using gas oven lighters or one that produces sparks? these should be readily available in many places such as Japan home, pricerite and local hardware stores. matches can usually be found in the chinese incense stores (where local people buy things like ghost money for worshipping in temples and etc)

Wow ... so there really are no matches in Hong Kong! Thanks for your replies everyone. I do use the spark lighters for the burners, but for lighting the oven it's tricky -- dropping a match in is much easier and safer. And I do have those expensive, decorative boxes of matche from Indigo (8 in a box I believe) on my coffee table for lighting incense, but not very economical for everyday household use. Will continue my quest and let you know if I find anything.

Thanks Riceman and Mayo - will try your suggestons.

no, we have "normal" matches from Ingido, not decorative - they are normally sitting in bowls at check out... but suspect supermarket ones will be cheaper of course.

I have never been albe to find matches at actual supermarkets in HK.
We just get my in-laws to bring us long matches from Sweden. ;)

Why don't you pick up matches from bars around town. Most of them have them.

Yes.... places like dragon i and wildfire have them.

The probel with bar matches are that they tend to be very short. Not very useful for lighting a tea candle in a deep holder.

Instead of the lighters that spark, get the lighters that have a flame, we use them for oven, bbq, candles etc. Can be brought everywhere.

Found them! They are in a store in Sheung Wan near Central Market/ Japan Home called the "UK store". It has nothing to do with UK and I don't know why its called that. My helper said it just was. It is a store where they sell Filipino, Indonesian, Malaysian, Chinese food products.
