Dear Readers,
I am desperate to find a good lawyer in the Manchester area re: wills + estates.
Please forward any recommendations or contacts that you may have. The situation is dire. Thank you, Eleanor (kennedytown@gmail.com)

Youneed a reputable firm with a good private client department. Check out this link:http://www.legal500.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1136&l5country_code=ov&l5directory=l500&Itemid=548#includes/get_content_page_l500.php?l5country_code=NW§ion_name=Private%20client&workarea_title=Personal%20tax,%20trusts%20and%20probate. The Legal 500 is well recognised within the profession for identifying the best in a particular field in various geographical areas.
But be warned, lawyers can seriously damage your wealth (I know, I used to be one). Best to check who would do the work and what the hourly rate is. Senior Associates are often a good bet because they will have a good deal of experience and might well be nudging partnership, but their hourly rates will be less then that of a partner. That said, sometimes it is a question of tactics and strategy rather than just law so some "grey hair" thinking is called for (usually means going for a partner).
I would advise against going for a "cheap" solution. Best to go for value. As a senior partner with a fair amount of grey hair, I was often better value than a non-partner because the case called for experience and a fair bit of cunning.
If it is fairly run-of-the-mill stuff, then don't need a partner.
Good luck

Thank you. Are wills + estates called "probate" law? I guess we'd like to go for medium value. The case isn't cut-and-dry, but it's not a mess, either.

yes, it's probate. call three or four of the recommended firms, ask for their hourly rates and who would be the appropriate person. Maybe you need a senior associate. Partners tend to be the heavyweights who will delegate as much as they can. This is a good thing - they (genuinely) want to get the work done by the right person at the right hourly rate.
