Apple Mac repairs under the radar

ORIGINAL POST

I have two (actually 3) broken Macs (Hmpsh) My investment is too high to walk away from Mac at present - though from what I heard from the official repair guy, maybe I should never have embarked down this road ....THEY USE PC'S!!!!.

While my new Macbook Pro is waiting for its new hard-drive under warrantee, following complete meltdown, my 2 year old Powerbook G4 15" is suffering from screen loss - ( the CASE guys have told me it will be a $7000 mother board replacement

My previous ( now son's) G4 15" has a 'lava-lamp' screen display ( the CASE guys have told me that I need a new $6000 screen) IN both cases I just can't afford to fix them and I think its a total rip off to just discard them as I have been advised by the Approved Apple repair people to do

Does anyone know of a second hand repair Mac geek in Hong Kong

I will go anywhere to find someone with a sensible attitude and not too greedy prices

I heard there was a repair person in Sai Kung

Any ideas?

Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble. I accidentally stepped on my wife's old G4, and cracked the screen creating a horrible lava lamp blob display. I took it down to Wanchai: go to the 298 Computer Zone, at 298 Hennesy Road Wanchai.

Go upstairs to the first level of shops, weave until you find an up escalator and go to the next level. Search out the Mac store sitting on the 'outside' corner of the outer ring of stores. Opposite this store - on the 'inside', so to speak, is a tiny corner shop with its windows full of old Macs, batteries and other Apple paraphernalia.

They changed the broken screen in 15 *minutes*, and it cost around HKD900 (can't recall exactly). Far quicker and cheaper than getting it done at the official repairer, or importing a screen from the USA and installing it yourself.

If I still had the receipt I could give you more specific directions. Worth the explore!

Good luck

PS. They were quick to offer help with a memory upgrade - can't be too much to ask them about the motherboard problem.

ThebestMango, that is not particularly helpful and in fact downright mean.

As for the repairs, I agree with charlie1. ComputerZone is great and that store, while I have not used it myself, looks very professional.

Thankyou everyone for the useful ideas

I will go off today and track a couple down and report back

RE Mango - I drive a SMART Car and IF I had a choice I would not drive a Ferrari regardless of the cost. Waste comes in red with arrogance at the wheel. However I do expect that Ferrari offers some sort of repair service that is not the equivalent of 50% of buying a new car if the windscreen breaks!

I hope you have a nice day. Take a holiday in Sichuan and get a reality check on your values.

Hey everyone who helped - thanks

I went to 298 and investigated 3 likely stores who could all help. I could not find the exact one mentioned and asked around - found the general location but not the exact shop.

They could all replace the 'lava-lamp' screen with a new one.

One wanted $3800, another $2500 and the last one $1800 so I took him up on the offer as he was quite helpful as well - Jacky Hung Mobile 62003187 Shop 207 Sky Trade Technology Co Ltd/ 298 Computer Centre. There do seem to be a couple of switched on Mac guys in this building - better than Wanchai or Sham Shui Po.

As far as the other G4 Powerbook - he was not too hopeful and like the others he recommended a new computer but said it MAY be possible to fix the video card alone and not the whole motherboard and if so he will put a cap on it at $2000 - if its more he won't go ahead and if less he will do it

All round I think he offered the most sensible and honest appraisal. He seemed pretty switched on.

I will call the other guy to see what he thinks but generally the consensus was that the mother board problem is best relegated to the TOO HARD basket.

Cheers and thanks for coming to the rescue - its saved me a few thousand today.

Glad you found what you were looking for.

ComputerZone is in fact a bit more "specialized" than the other two centers. Not as many tourists and more "real geeks". There's even a decent PC cooling store.

Er forgive me but what is a 'PC cooling store'??

Yes you are definitely right - no tourists - I hadn't noticed come to think of it but it was rather refreshing to be treated like a local!!!!! Less frazzling and hassling for sure.

"Er forgive me but what is a 'PC cooling store'??"

:)

High end heatsinks, silent fans, fan controllers, cases optimized for high-performance and/or silent cooling. I think they also carry some water cooling stuff.

Cooling is probably the single most important factor in building either a very high performance or very silent PC. I am in the latter camp latter. I don't want to hear the thing. It requires a lot of careful component selection.

ax...

any recommendation for silent power supplies? mine has a screeching fan and I need to replace it...not particularly high-end machine...just want it to be as quiet as possible for a reasonable price

funbobby. The absolute king is a fanless power supply which makes no noise. Zen sells a model. You can find it in one of the stores in the basement of Golden Arcade in Sham Shui Po. The drawbacks are very high price (1050 Honkies) and relatively low output at 450W. If you're not running a gaming rig the latter shouldn't be an issue.

If you want to spend a more reasonable amount of money (like 400-600), you can get some very nice Silverstone units in the aforementioned store on the top floor of ComputerZone. These do have a fan but it's 120mm and with decently shaped blades. The rule of thumb is to pay more than the low end and ensure there is a thermally controlled 120mm fan. The bigger the fan, the slower it spins (=less noise) to move the same amount of air. Just ask the store.
