Tier 2 schools.

Hi all,

Not sure if HK works the same as Japan but schools were generally split up in tiers. With tier 1 schools (like the American and English schools) being the most expensive.

I am guessing that schools like the Australian School is "teir 1" based on tuition fees which are about 87k/year.

Can anyone recommend any good "tier 2" schools? Where English is the main language. Something equivalent to what would be called a private school in Australia.

Or should I wait to find where I end up living and just look for schools around there?

Thanks.

In Hong Kong, schools are put into tiers according to their quality ie exam results. So some tier one schools are almost free and in some expensive schools there are second rate teachers and students who couldn't get into better ones.

You are looking for an EMI school - English Medium Instruction. The main ones are English Schools Foundation (ESF) and these have zones so you go to the one zoned to where you live - but they still may be oversubscribed so you may not get in. You have a range of international schools that are EMI and also local EMI schools. Be aware that sometimes local EMI schools teach a subject (maybe social studies or maths) in Cantonese. There has been much advice given on selecting a school in this forum and the Parenting forum. Wiki has a good list for you to start at or you could email the education board for a list edb.gov.hk Good luck.
