ID Card

ORIGINAL POST

I just went to apply for my ID card and was told that as my dependents visa is only valid for another five months, they won't issue me with one.

They said when my husband gets his renewed in October I can get my ID card then.

Has anyone else had this problem? My visa allows me to work, but how can I without an ID card number?

its still a big pain in the butt, you need an ID card for so many things in Hong Kong. Maybe shouldn't have waited so long to get the ID card and get one as soon as your husbands contract or visa is renewed this time.

We only got married in March and it has taken this long to get it processed, otherwise I would have got it earlier.

All forms seem to require an ID card number for jobs applications. I'll just have to give it a go with my passport sticker instead..

Well if that is the case, there really is not a lot you can do nor could you have done if that is their regulation, You'll just have to wait till your husband gets his visa renewed. I am sure any potential employers will just need to know that you are legal to work in Hong Kong, if you explain to them the ID card is forthcoming, but its still going to be a problem for them as well when they deal with Inland Revenue

You should actually be able to get an ID card - in fact, you need to get one - you must have one by law, so I do not know what they are telling you. did you go to immigration in Wanchai? All dependents need an id card.

i agree - i think everyone has to have one after 30 days of being resident. As you are resident they really have to give you one. Who did you speak to?

I agree, it is a bit strange that they deny you the card.

That's what I thought - I'm sure it says that you HAVE to have one within 30 days. I went to the Immigration Department in Wanchai (ID section) and the lady at the ID card application desk said I couldn't have one.

That is really strange, it is law that you have one, maybe you should talk to her superior.

Apparently "Every adult who enters and is permitted to stay in Hong Kong for more than 180 days must apply to register within 30 days of arrival" but as mine stay is, at present, only for about 150 days, i'm not eligible.

I went through a similar thing. My husband's contract had a three month probation period at the start, so we were only granted a 3 month work permit/dependant permit respectively.

I still started working with just my dependant visa in my passport as proof of my legal right to work. Towards the end of the 3 months, we had to apply for a 1 year work visa for my husband. Once this was approved, only then were we allowed to apply for an ID card.

My employer was okay with this situation, I just showed them my passport and explained the nature of my husband's contract, then udpated them once I had an ID card.

Perhaps your husband's employer could write some form of explanation to assist you with your employment applications?
