Hello, I am in most desperate need of help! I moved here from London just over a month ago to join an offshore wealth management company, i signed a contract for one year and was told probation period would be 3 months. They did not provide me with a work visa but told me I would be here on a "succumbent basis" arranged via Europe. The salary was commission only and I had to invest my own money to move. They now cut my contract short and I am in need of a new job as don't want to leave HK.

I'm a Psychology graduate with work experience in mortgage underwriting/brokering, retail banking and sales. Looking for anything to keep me here!

please please please help!

Many thanks

If you are willing to work straight commission, there will be lots of jobs available, particularly if you get into the IFA space, but i doubt any of the companies would be willing to sponsor you for a work visa without a track record, and you haven't been in Hong Kong very long so I am not sure where or how you would develop your leads either.

that is the association, I couldn't find a full member list but it is a start. There is a company called Bridgewater that is always hiring, but I cannot find the website, which is not a good sign for them to be honest. There is a guy I know that is in charge of hiring for an IFA, but I cannot remember the company name, you will have to call the switch board and take note when the receptionist answers the phone

that was a few years ago though, I am not sure he will be there now. Sorry I cant be of more help. Good luck

that company I was talking about, Bridgewater, has changed its name, they are looking and there is a private clients job that would probably suit you, you need to have passed the HKSI exam though.

Its not that hard getting work in the field she is looking to get into. Most firms will have no qualms about hiring someone who is willing to work straight commission, and if they are catering to expats, they may also be willing to provide the necessary work visa in order to be able to offer advisers who are also expatriate. Her only draw back is a lack of sales record in Hong Kong, but it is still worth a try.

Almost all IFA jobs are commission only, the good ones make a hell of a lot of money, there is nothing gullible about taking a job which pays high commission rates as salary particularly if you think you might be a good salesperson

more power to you anna99! if you want to stay in HK, you can and will make it happen. i came to HK for a holiday 6 years ago with my 2 kids. i fell in love with it. i needed to get a job. it was one of the biggest struggles ever, but i did it! i make a better living here than i could have ever hoped for in the states, as well as an amazing quality of life for each of us. i still feel a sense of accomplishment, not to mention i have given my kids the experience of a lifetime. do not 'go home while there is still time'--if you want to make a life here--GO FOR IT!!!! best of luck to you!

Nobody is leading anyone up any sort of path. If someone wants to make a go of it, then we should encourage them. Just because they don't do it in the way you would have done does not mean she is doomed to failure. I know plenty of people that have come to Hong Kong in the way she has, worse even, on a whim with no work visa and a spot of savings and done very very well. If you have lived in Hong Kong as long as I think you have, then you would know, the one thing with this city, is anything can happen, and does happen more often than not. And if someone were to ask me what was the best thing about Hong Kong, that would be it.

And just so you know ppatio, the guy i use for my investments has been doing it for 30 years and makes serious cash. If you are a good sales person in that business, what happens is at the end, clients call you for new business because you have a great reputation and you get recommended, just like my IFA was recommended to me

I think patio meant well. I also think if anna is really desperate to stay in hk, she will manage to. However it was a lot easier for anyone who was white to show up here and land a job. It is not as easy now. Perhaps she should try to go to southeast asia and work her way back here.

I know ppatio meant well and I know where he/she is coming from, but a negative attitude is not going to help in the slightest. the person has decided they want to stay, they weren't asking whether it was a good idea, but rather, how to go about it.

its not difficult to get a work visa - give it a go; you could try the henley Group (they are always bugging me to invest in stuff!)
