Is it possible to drive from HK Island to the Big Buddha?

you could drive to the cable car terminus in Tung Chung, but I think you need a special permit (restricted hours) to drive over to south Lantau to access Nong Ping itself...anyone confirm this?

Yes you need to have a permit to drive in South Lantau, and they are usually only issued to residents.

The most direct way to get there is to drive to Tung Chung, park in the shopping centre, then its a few minutes walk to either the bus which goes direct there and is quite an impressive route, or the cable car.
