Hi all,
Is it possible to sponsor dependents like mothers, fathers etc? In Japan we were able to sponsor my mother-in-law as a dependent as she acted as our babysitter. However in Japan we needed a particular visa to do this. Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks.

Hi Solomani,
You can sponsor your parents as long as they're over 60 and any children as long as they're under 18.

If your mother in law acts as your babysitter - maybe a helper visa would work? Sounds weird, I know, but maybe a route to explore. I find it best to call immigration office. It often takes some time to get trough but you usually get good advice from the hotline. Maybe immigration even has another option, you never know.

Getting a domestic helper's visa isn't as easy as you think it is, if you're not a domestic helper. Before getting approval for someone to come as a domestic helper, they had to have been doing that sort of role for the preceding two years. And Immigration Department would want to see documentary proof. Otherwise everyone would try to get their relatives in on that route if it were that simple.

Thanks all. Will investigate more fully when I get there.
