Afraid of squashing baby

ORIGINAL POST

This probably sounds really stupid, but our baby is breastfed and sleeps with us. That works fine for my wife, as it helps her get some little bit of sleep but I live in fear of flattening the little thing. Have tried a special bed divider etc. as barriers, but still having sleepless nights. Any suggestions?

Does not sound stupid at all. You can buy a bedside cot called an Arm's Reach. They sell them at B2B for about $3.5k. We had one, but a friend has it now. It is basically tied onto the bed and becomes an extension of it (adds a couple of feet to it). Mattress height adjusts so that it can be level with the bed or lowered as the child learns to climb etc. It can also be used as a playpen. It allows the baby to sleep on the other side of your wife without being rolled on or falling on the floor. hope this helps.

If you're really afraid perhaps baby should not sleep in bed with you. Otherwise mum of 2 seems to have a solution.

Thank you all. Agree, that cot sounds perfect. Will pop in there tomorrow. Small price to pay for some sleep.

I think I've seen one of those on the Classifieds. If you're lucky, it might be an even smaller price to pay.

you can get a co-sleeper that sits in the bed between you and your spouse. has a hard bottom and sides covered by quilted pad, so you can't roll over onto it and baby can't roll out...only about HK300 too...

You can also try using "moses basket" and place it between both of you.

Personally I believe your fears are very natural, just like fears of dropping baby or if baby slip when you take him out of the bath and lots of others(I hope I didn't put new fears in you :p ), BUT I also believe that you have this parental instinct like a biological clock, and you will never squash your baby.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Am a different man today! The Arm's Reach thingy is attached to our bed. I sleep (next to my wife), my wife sleeps, baby sleeps! Result! Unfortunately Dora, I did not see your message until I had already bought a new one. However, still 100% worth it, even if we only use it for another month or 2. Simple but amazing invention. Thanks again!
