Interested in the experiences of expatriates

Hello, my name is Catherine and as part of my Masters in Organisational Psychology, I am completing a study that explores the experiences and needs a person may face as an expatriate whilst living and working in a foreign country. Having been a member of an expatriate family myself, I have a strong interest in this area of research.

The findings of this study will be potentially beneficial to employees (the expatriate) and the organisation in which the expatriate is employed. Potential benefits for the employee can be a more positive experience during their overseas assignment and less stress and discomfort, whilst the organisation may benefit by having reduced failure rates as well as increased employee productivity and job satisfaction.

I am looking for people that have been sent by the organisation in which they are employed, to work and live in a foreign country for an extended period of time (a minimum of a 12 month assignment). Participants should be aged between 18 and 65 and currently be on their international assignment. Participants must have been sent by their organisation on this international assignment. Furthermore, participants must have already completed at least 6 months of their international assignment.

Participation in this study involves completing an anonymous online questionnaire. The questionnaire includes a series of questions regarding your experiences, social support, personal and work values and demographic details. The questionnaire should take around 20 – 30 minutes to complete. The direct link to the questionnaire is

Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete the questionnaire and contributing to the results of this research study.

Hello,

Thank you for your response. When I first started the research project I was considering having an incentive for participants, however, unfortunately and much to my disappointment, I did not have the means to be able to provide such incentives. Furthermore, if I was to acquire personal details (such as name, address etc) it would be difficult to get my research project through the Human Ethics department. So, I am relying on the notion that people will complete my questionnaire and contribute to my research study for altruistic reasons and hopefully enjoy taking the time to reflect upon their experiences of being an expatriate.

Thanks again for your email and suggestion. Enjoy your time in Hong Kong.
