EDB NET vs School NET

ORIGINAL POST

Here is a situation...

I work in a school, enjoy teaching there, been given a exteremly beautiful accomodation, plus a decent salary( not much different from EDB Net except the gratuity).

I applied for EDB and I have been called for interview. ( although I know it is still just an interview)

The twist is, I was recently told in my school that I would be promoted to the position of Department head next year.

Now am debating weather to at all go for the interview or focus on my present job where I am happy, peaceful and well respected.

I would like to invite teachers who have worked as both to help me to understand the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Am I being naive as to think of sticking to my present school rather than EDB ( in case am offered)? Are there any hidden long term benefits to EDB job that am overlooking?

All help is appreciated. Thanks for your help

Hi Orangemoon,

You have a difficult choice to make. If you are happy at your current school and have a good working relationship with the students and staff, then moving to the EDB NET scheme is a gamble. There is no guarantee that you will get a good school. The money is probably bettter because it looks like we are getting a raise in the living allowance soon. By all means attend the interview and find out where you will be on the pay scale and conditions they will offer you. Then you will be better able to make a decision. Cheers.

I would agree that moving is definitely a gamble - why move to another place if you are happy and going to get promoted? You may regret the move. Definitely check out the school that they offer you first before you do anything! There is a NET association that you can contact and they may be able to help you with information.

There are too many schools that "abuse" their NETs and work them into the ground, whereas some are just great and in them you actually feel as if you are doing some good. The banding system in HK is such that there are 3 bands, added to that another subdivision in to CMI and EMI - Chinese Medium of Instruction and English Medium of Instruction. All EMI schools are at the top - Band 1, but there are again varying degrees of Band 1 - some better than others.

One other thing to be aware of is the latest trend in HK - drama. It seems that most schools now are jumping onto the drama bandwagon and expect their NETs to be able to teach drama - ok if you have some drama training, but if you don't, then it is a problem.
