Newborn baby bottles & formula

I am in the process of preparing for the arrival of my first baby, due in about 6 weeks.

I am planning to breastfeed, but I am also wanting a baby bottle and a small tin of formula in the house 'just in case' there are any problems. (i.e. a hungry screaming baby at 4am and a problem with milk supply, latching on etc.etc.) I would also like to give my husband the opportunity to feed the baby by expressing milk, once I have established breastfeeding.

I like the look of the Adiri bottles as they are BPA free and are more 'breast like', however they are expensive, so I don't want to buy too many to start with.

The advice I need is - how many bottles should I buy to begin with? Would 1 or 2 be enough for emergency (or expressed milk) feed?

Also, is there a formula with a good reputation (I haven't even started looking at that yet!) that i could have on hand just in case?

Rach,

there are a lot of discussion on formula on this forum - do a search - people have posted lots of stuff. In short - we used Aptamil, in UK our health visitor said it was closest to breast milk (mind you most of them claim that) - you can get it in HK in Taste, Mannings etc.

You might want to go down organic route - then HIPP organic in Bumps to Babes. But do have a read of the forum.

My big point about Aptamil sold here in HK was that it is made in NZ rather than China etc... I like that!

As for bottles - get 2 small ones and 2 big ones - the babies move on from small bottles very quickly - dont buy more than 2.

Another point - there was a discussion recently on BPA in plastic etc, as you mention - do a search on this forum - was literally couple of weeks ago. There are some safe brands like BFree (or I guess Adiri? not seen it or heard of it I am afraid) - can get in bumps to babes - suggest you stick to the safe ones!

Good luck!!

and i suggest u get bottles that are easy to replace. not ones that u need to wait for a week or so to ship from somewhere...

u dont want to be organising that in the middle of all the things that you have to get used to with a new baby

As mentioned, 2 small bottles, then a few big ones. Buy a set to save money. Typically you'll get 2+2 and some nipples.

Dr. Brown's are now BPA free (http://www.handi-craft.com/bottles/DrBrowns_and_BPA.shtm). We have found that they work really well. They are also easily found in HK. One tip is to get the higher numbered nipples as the children get older. A #1 nipple doesn't have a hole nearly large enough for a 1 year old.
