Limo to Hua Hin

ORIGINAL POST

Hi y'all. We're regular visitors to BKK but thought we'd try out Hua Hin for once. We'll get in to BKK airport at 8pm local time and then want to get a limo to take us to Hua Hin. Any recommendations? Hotel limo return is more than cost of stay so I'm looking for alternatives. Also, what's the journey like - would only a fool do this at night?

we did not do a limo - a normal hotel car. Must you have limo? takes 2 hours - easy but well worth it, otherwise bus or train - and takes much longer. I personally would go the same night and get there rather than stay a night in BKK - you will be there for a late dinner at the night market!

Did in last October.... but both ways in day time and luxury car arranged by hotel (evason resort). Very comfy, good driver and a great drive! Was with my son. We all enjoyed it.

Am checking to go the Chiang Mai in July.... Dive Bum, since you're a regular to Thailand, what do you think about it? Is it good to do it alone? Any advise would be helpful. Thanks.

We're regulars to BKK rather than all of Thailand. We've only been to Chiang Mai a couple of times, most recently in Dec '05. Quick look on google says July is beginning of rainy season and can lead to spectacular floods...which may be interesting. I've always done Thailand with my wife and we've always felt it to be very safe (though not been down in the South), whether in town or in the countryside. CM is a fun place, good massages (Relax was very good for Thai massage - mid market establishment), a few temples, nice night market, lots of cheap/good restaurants, lots places to have a beer and possibly meet travel companions (especially if staying in homestay types places). Doi Sulthep temple is very pretty, an elephant ride can be fun. Treking tours may be tricky if very wet. Overall I don't think you'll be bored by yourself if staying for a few days. I wouldn't spend a week there unless as a base for walking tours etc.

Response to Idsllvn:

Other than a homestay in Ayuthaya, which had a tuk tuk as its 'hotel car', every regular hotel I've stayed in only provided what they called 'limos'. The Sheraton in Hua Hin (Cha am) will do a return trip in a Merc for B13,000. Our 4 nights in the hotel will cost us less than this (we booked early). If we were travelling during the day I might go for a regular cab, but that would be a scary trip (aiport to BKK is bad enough). For a longish night trip we'd prefer to pay more for a newish/bigish/safe car and hopefully a careful driver. Getting a limo ups the odds in our favour. Would rather not pay 13K for it, though. Looking forward to hitting the night market either way.

Thanks Moppet. This is one of various sites I've looked at that show cheaper rates. Have you tried them before? If so, what was your experience like?

Thank you, Dive bum. I just plan to go to relax so I think it would be good to see the monsoon rains while sitting in a patio in one of the garden villas in Chiang Mai.

The Hua Hin drive is exactly 3 hours from the Swarnabhumi airport. I remember we had a BMW on one way and a Merc on the other. They were pretty expensive but I do not remember the exact price. I think given the comfort and safety it was money well spent.

We've been to Hua Hin 3 times, paid about 4.000bht for a mini van and driver, complete with dvd player to keep the kids amused. takes about 2 1/2 hours, usually longer coming back when you hit the BKK traffic. Last time we went we stayed at the Worra Burra, a lovely small hotel on the beach with only 70 rooms. Grand Hyatt is lovely if you can afford it. Hua Hin is a great area if you like golf. We hired a Ute one day and went and visited some caves and country parks.

Just asked hubby and he thinks it was less than that, maybe 300-3500baht.

To Zonked, for up north in Chiang Mai, we had great experience in this family run boutique resort www.sukantara.com just one word... BEAUTIFUL! It is really out of the world but one thing to note is that there is no other means of transport to get to places unless you rent a vehicle yourself or get the resort to arrange it for you.

This one sound interesting but have not try it www.krisdadoi.com

We finally made it to Hua Hin over Christmas. Thought it was rather boring unless you are into golf. Lots of cheap bars and restaurants but overall a bit 'grey' cf Phuket. Anyway, I wanted to report on my limo experiences.

BKK - Hua Hin: We stayed the night in BKK (Westin Hotel, very nice) and then took a Westin limo down to Hua Hin (Sheraton, in Cha Am, fairly nice hotel but very popular with families and very average food). Limo was a Mercedes E220 and cost B5,500 one-way (all in). Driver had his seat quite a ways back so I didn't have that much room, which was a surprise as I'd always assumed there'd be lots of leg room with a Merc. We set out late morning and got to the hotel in 2 hours. Traffic was fine. On the way back we arranged a ride with a local taxi driver that we had used one night to get back to the hotel from down town Hua Hin. Lots of drivers advertising their services in Hua Hin. We picked this guy as he didn't drive like a nutter and had an old but comfy/roomy station wagon. Cost B2,500 inc tip. Trip took 2.25 hours on very quiet roads during late morning/early afternoon. He kept to the speed limit as I suspect his car wouldn't go any faster.
