"Working Nomad"

ORIGINAL POST

I have the opportunity of working remotely in the near future. I am looking to take this opportunity to live in various destinations, probably 1-3 months. I may have to fly back to our office in Hong Kong occasionally.

Dependable and reasonably priced wireless is crucial, as is good food (which is plentiful in this region). I also dont want to stay in overpriced accomodation - not really a party animal and dont see the need to be in an expat ghetto.

Questions are-

* has anyone done something similar where they have travelled whilst maintaining a demanding, full time job?

* does any one have any suggestions for locations?

Thanks

I am constantly working out of the office (just back last night from working out of Canada and Brazil for the past 6 weeks - and waking up at 5am due to jet lag...)

I have found that things have improved considerably in terms of internet access - even vietnam is doable now. And in the middle of the Amazon I was able to get online with no problems

The only place Ive had a problem is Burma - do not try to work from there - the internet does not really exist (you cannot hook up your laptop and must use business centre computers ... and its like working off a 56k dial up that seldom works)

I think you will find that most hotels will have internet connectivity however they dont always have in-room access. Because I am online constantly working with our office in Canada at night and HK etc... in the day I MUST have inroom net. Most of the top hotels have this so that is where I usually stay because theres nothing more stressful than not being able to log on when traveling so i bite the bullet on costs...

If you are looking at budget hotels I think that in most locations you will find some that have free wifi... I think that your best bet is to try to get in touch with some of the properties before you go to confirm they have the facilities you need.

My favourite place? Has to be Luang Prabang - a lot of the hotels have a satellite hook up and the wifi is lightening fast I suppose because not a lot of people are using the pipe... Last time I was there I was sitting out drinking wine on the main street on a chilly evening with the stars twinkling above thinking how cool is this... Was also pretty cool to be able to watch the NHL playoffs online in the middle of nowhere in Brazil.

How do you get online in the middle of the amazon?, surely they don't have wifi deep in the jungle?, they still have tribes there that have never made contact with modern civilisation, and they have wifi internet access already. thats nuts

Most of the 'hotels' have wireless internet - I would think its coming from a satellite link same as satellite TV... it slows considerably when it's raining but generally it was decent (I have the same issues in Bali). As you can see some of the places arent particularly primitive - the place I stayed was about two hours by boat from Manaus and surrounded by wildlife (and malaria...) but it had net http://www.ariauamazontowers.com/photo.htm
