Help...i've yet to find a hairdresser in HK who is great at colouring red hair...can anyone recommend someone who is good at getting natural-looking reds and is also good at cutting frizzy hair? I'm desperate and would really like some advice before I spend more thousands of dollars on something I don't love. Otherwise, just the name of a great colourist would be great. Someone mentioned Rudy at O2..Any comments on him. Is he a good listener?

I went to Renni at the Hairdressers.

I don't know about the red hair, but she can certainly handle frizzy curls. She cuts really well and teaches you how to tame your curls and different ways of styling. She has lots of great ideas and is really patient.

notout, red colors are one of the tricky ones to manage here. Firstly if you have natural red hair then you are dealing with one of the most dominant colors in terms of pigment, now if you want to retain the red which it seems you do then it should not be too difficult. Its just a matter of the right level and tone. That said there will be different outcomes depending on what is on the hair already. Other factors to keep in mind are the frequency that you wash your hair, time out in the sun and even the brand of color the salon uses. Reds are also the fasted to fade when you are dealing with artificial color. As I mentioned different brands will give you different results to and of course have different intensity of color pigment in the color itself so this is often a big factor. A brand such as L'Oreal for eg has very nice reds but the pigment is weeker than say a Well brand color so the coverage is not as good and can be seen as being a bit translucent. Again that said, the aim of this is to try and achieve a more natural finish but I dont find it lasts too long.

When you are dealing with the 'frizzes' you will also want to be be carefull on how often you color your hair and the level of peroxide used as the more you do the more you will add to the frizz. Although coloring does not have to be too damaging on the hair when it is over done it will definately be a frizz factor which then leads us to having to feed the hair with more moisture and strengthen it with more protien. Hydration treatments with a mix of gentle protiens will help not only the condition of the hair/color but also help tame some of the frizz so its worth considering.

As for finding someone suitable to do it I would suggest going around for a few consultations until you find someone you are completely comfortable with. You do need someone who is going to listen and advise based on your needs so the consultaion is very important.

Anyways I hope that is of some help.

Tips For Coloring Red Hair

The red shades vary in depth from a light strawberry blond to rich auburns and striking burgundy. The tones are either warm or cool. Warm reds are those with gold or copper undertones and are best on people with warm skin tones and eyes. Cool reds have more blue in them, producing a burgundy tone. The cool tones are best on pink or red skin tones and with blue or gray eyes.

We suggest that you understand the limits of hair color to reduce problem results. Generally speaking a person can successfully lighten natural hair colors by no more than three levels with one application. As your natural color lightens, it will tend to pull more warmth (gold and copper undertones). If a cooler red is desired, we recommend you stay closer to your natural level to yield better results.

A typical problem for coloring hair red is for the root area to come up too "hot" or bright and/or the ends turn dull and brown. The brighter roots are generally the result of body heat, which distorts the end result and/or a higher concentration of gray hair. The duller ends are the result of excess porosity in the hair. The hair shaft simply cannot hold on to the red pigments. You can not use hair color formulas to lighten already colored hair.

If you've recently colored your hair and want it lighter, using another hair color will not work. In fact, coloring already treated hair may drive the previous pigment further into your hair, making it difficult for even a professional to remove. Coloring hair will only lighten your natural color. You may leave the ends fade out naturally, or talk with a color technician about a color remover first.

Tips for maintaining a glossy, frizz free mane in the Hong Kong humidity

The tips I most often give my clients are to cut or trim their hair regularly [6-8 weeks]. Use a non-sticky smoothing serum, such as Bain de Terre: shine serum, after drying. Substitute their conditioner for a masque or moisturizing treatment, used every time hair is shampooed, it helps weigh the hair down and lock in vital moisture into the structure of the hair, and every 2-3 months get a conditioning colour applied throughout to prevent the hair looking faded and dry.
