ours girls are 2 years old and are ok in their cots but I keep on thinking they are getting too big for the cots! they sort of end up sleeping across pushed agains bars half the time! thinking of buying a cheapo Ikea kids bed for another few years before we buy a proper bed? What age do you move your child to a bed? many thanks!

I moved my twin boys into beds at 21 months due to second set of twin boys needing the cots. They had bed guards which ended up has another obstacle to climb,it took a few months before the novelty wore off so they would not run around instead of sleeping.the second set went into beds at 18 months because they are climbers and it was more of a danger keeping them in a cot.(everything is fixed to the walls,Im good with a drill now)Good luck, expect running around till novelty wears off ,you just cannot stop them.

Don't move them too late. Climbing out of a crib (and falling on your head) is dangerous. A bed is at least low enough that a couple of pillows around it are good protection.

Our #1 moved to a bed at 16 months (just ahead of #2 getting her crib). Absolutely no issues. We have low rails on the bed so if she rolls she won't roll out. The rails have a gap at the bottom end. We put a cute little step stool there so she can get in and out.

We got a full length bed that can be used until she moves out.

#2 is due to move in a couple of months.

Idsllvn, there are plenty of full size that are quite low. Ours is no more than 35-40cm from the top of the mattress.

Indigo has some nice ones. Otherwise you can get a custom made one. The prices are very good in HK for custom furniture.

We bought our first one in the US and are now getting a local carpenter to clone it for #2. We're just going with a darker wood for contrast.

ah, yes! Indigo - you are right, forgot about them - they have some kiddies ones as well - will have a look. I am sort of thinking of getting a real grown up bed (which is not too low) when they are 7-8 and go with kiddie ones till then. So once they move out we can just use their beds as guest ones or something - 35-40 cm is a bit low for a grown up bed, no?

Well it is a bit low but no biggie. I mean no problem to sleep in for an adult. You can always extend the legs later as well.

joshmomm, ours two have always been in their own room, from day 1 - I am one of those people who dont like having kids sleeping in their room. There were a couple of nights in 2 yrs when we had to and, forget it, I could not sleep at all, listening to them breathe, etc etc... so we are just trying to figure out whether to move them out of their cot...

I saw that Grobag make these bed lined that all clip on to each other with poppers - the duver and pillow to the bed sheet so the kids cant fall out and cant end up with the pillow on their face - brilliant stuff - before I order from UK - anyone knows if it is possible to buy it (or something similar) here?

That sounds quite convoluted and unnecessarily complex to me. A normal "growbag"/sleeping bag works just fine. Our #1, who spent her first 2 years in a colder climate, used one until she was about 7-8 months. We got the kind that can be unfolded for growth.

Pillow in face (or at least teddy-blanket) makes my #2 happy. :) At least that's where she puts her little blanket when she sleeps. If she's old enough to flip over she's old enough to get pillow in face without suffocating.

When the kid is old enough for a "real" bed (18-24 months), she will rarely if ever fall out if you use rails. Our #1 has never fallen out of bed. The rails don't even have to be that high. Just enough to indicate to sleeping brain that "body needs to stop rolling in this direction". She's smart enough to figure out that falling is bad and for that you can put pillows or a mattress around the bed.

this is paranoid but how do you know your baby is suddenly capable of climbing out of their cot? my baby is 13 months. he always sleeps in his room with the door closed. when i come in to get him in the morning he is either sitting or sometimes standing up and yelling at me to come (!). i assume one day i will walk in and see him in the process of trying to climb out? ie, successful climbing out doesn't happen over night? even though i have not seen evidence that he can do it, how do i know that he's not just going to do it one morning??!! also are we meant to take out cot bumpers and bolster pillows so they can't leverage on them?

Sashimi Girl - dont worry - some kids never do - mine are 2 and NEVER even tried to climb out - I actually wonder how other kids ever do!! Mine two are indeed in Grobags (axptguy! :)) so how on earth can they even try to lift a leg in that sleeping bag?

:)!

yeah mine used to be in a grobag but now he likes to sleep with his legs so wide apart he's basically doing the splits! i thought his grobag was restricting this comfortable sleeping position.

oh yes! then expect him to start climbing out in the next few months i reckon!! :) Ours love their bags (say "bag! bag!" when we put pjs on). I even ordered the 3-6 yrs ones (they are tall for 2 yrs anyway)... 94 cm - is this tall? or is it normal just tall next to those delicate chinese babies?

Our DD is 3 + 3months and never ever climbed out of her cot. She still does not sleep in a bed but in her cot which we took the side off so it’s like a bed with the rails on three sides. We initiated the move to this – only a couple of months ago. We asked her if she wanted to be able to get out of bed in the morning rather than waiting for us to get her and she said yes please! So then we got the cot side off that very evening. We plan to move to a bed when she needs the space but so far she doesn’t - it’s cheap and also provides some continuity – i.e. she has the freedom of a bed but the security of knowing it’s her old cot so maybe this is a good transition from moving from cot to bed. If of course the cot can be dismantled in this way and the child is not so big. I don’t know why she never climbed out – she could, but simply never tried except when we were there putting her to bed and then it was just a cheeky attempt but not a real one. We tried Gro-bags ages ago but she hated them.

I was always convinced she would fall out as she always slept right up on the side of the cot railings but she has cushions on the floor but as far as I know she has only fallen out once. Maybe she does it every night but gets back in or maybe thats when she comes to our bed? No idea but she sleeps pretty well.

Our two had no problems standing up in their growba with a little practice. ;) But they never tried to climb out. Hmmm...
