Seafood off the sea bed in Lantau

I saw people digging seashells out of the low tide and the sea in Lantau yesterday (Cheung Sha Beach). I followed them as it was quite good fun. Now I have about 30 cockles (about triple the size of a $10 coin). Question - do you think these are safe to eat? Obviously the people picking them did, but what about pollution?

Personally I wouldn't eat anything local or even go in the water

I wouldn't eat them, but you have to wonder where the clams/cockles in the seafood restaurants on Lantau/Lamma/Sai Kung, etc. come from? I don't really eat any of the seafood in Hong Kong. The pollution levels in the water is one main reason.

So you have just killed 30 good cockles that help clean up pollution for no good reason other than following others?
