Could someone please explain how the birth certificate process works? I have searched various threads but I am still unsure......
I am having my baby next week at QMH and I will need to get her birth certificate ASAP, in order to then sort out passport etc. for travelling soon after.
What will I need to do after the birth and how long does the process usually take?

Its really very easy and does not take long. We got it the same day.

Just take all the paperwork from the hospital along with yours and your husbands details to the local registration office. Will not take long at all.

Hi RachRobin, my husband applied for our son's birth certificate this morning! this is what you need to do.
1. Once your baby is born, the hospital will send off his name and details to the Births Registry. I think your office will be at Kowloon if you give birth at QMH. they are at Yau Ma Tei. The hospital will provide you with the paperwork you need to apply for his/her birth certificate.
2. You need to apply within 42 days so as not to incur a further fee. the cost of the certificate is $140. If you are married, either you or your husband can go and apply, you do not need to go with him or take the baby. You will need to provide both passports, HK ID card and original marriage certificate (plus 2 copies). I strongly suggest you arrive early because they are very strict and limit the amount of applications per day. My husband arrived at 8.30am for an 8.45am opening and was 6th in line, but he said that it got busy very soon afterwards.
3. You will be "interviewed" which is rather funny, but anyway it takes about 30 minutes and costs $140. You will be issued with the certificate on the spot.
4. Once that is complete, you need to apply for citizenship of your country of origin. We are Australian, so we need to fill out an application for citizenship by desent at the Australian Consulate (get it off website). You need to fill that out and take it to your consulate. Once that is complete, which I think takes around 10 days, you can then apply for his/her passport.
I can't tell you about the consulate part as we are going through that next week, but the above is the rigmarole we have been through this week. My husband said it was relatively painless, just a bit time consuming.
Good Luck!!

Interviewed! That never happened to me last year! Just went there with all the documentation, waited 10 minutes and there was the birth cert.
For UK you don't need to apply for citizenship. Just complete a passport application form and 7 days later a passport will be ready,
