Furniture from China (whats the secret?)

I heard from two people at our Yoga class around 6 months ago here that they have an interior designer who has taken them to Shenzhen and Guangzu to buy furniture for their homes, and then have it delivered to Hong Kong.

The prices are apparently much cheaper than Horizon Plaza. The girls both no longer come to the class and I don't have their contact details to find out how to get there or the names of the shops!

This weekend I went to the malls in senzen to check out the various shops but none of them seem to be like Horizon Plaza, or the ones that are, the prices are much more than what I can buy for in Hong Kong, even though they are most definitely made in China.

Can someone let me in on the secret?

not sure about Shenzhen and Guangzhou but i understand that for furniture one goes to Zhuhai - past Macao, next "stop"... but you need to know where - there are a number of warehouses..

Usually they will take them to the large outlets and factory warehouses out in the Baoan area near to the airport. This is where a lot of the HK stores also order their furniture from. Certainly much cheaper and you can either use their delivery services (by the kg) or arrange your own. There are also factory warehouses and outlets over in Longgang district but you would really need to know where you are and where you're going to consider shopping there.

In Zhuhai you can buy Chinese Antique Furniture for about half of the price (inlcuding delivery to Hong Kong) compared to Hong Kong. You can select unrestored furniture and they restore it for you. In this case you know for sure that the furniture is really antique. You can go to Zhuhai by ferry, which takes about 1 hour. I bought all my furniture fom Mr. Tom Tao, who runs a shop there. I was quite happy with the performance. In case you are interested I can give you his telephone number.
