Getting married in Hong Kong

For a wedding dress, I can't recommend Matador Couture in HK ( www.matadorcouture.com ) highly enough - lots of ready made, but completely made mine from my pictures - perfect English and a pattern cutter in house - no sending it to China to be made like many places, so the alterations and fittings are very quick. Good eye for detail as well. I would definitely use them again.

Obviously tastes and budgets differ but there are my tips - good luck.

I got married in April and bought a dress from Athena Valorus in Stanley Street, after having also visited Lusan Mandongus (lovely dresses but, typically, favourites were over my budget - staff also a tad pushy in my view) and a few others. I did not have long to plan - just 10 weeks, and felt that Connie at Athena Valorus was very calming and not at all pushy, in fact complete opposite. I was also able to go back several times and try on "the dress" before deciding. Whereas at Lusan Mandongus you were only permitted a certain number (4 or 5 ?) before having to pay a deposit.

As for photographer, we used a lovely/recommended lady called Stine (pronounced Stina) Baska, who charged for the day and prepared a website of the photos for us to forward to friends and family, as well as arrange our own prints if we wanted. I cannot recall exact cost but in region of $30,000 for the day. We were very pleased with the results. Her website is www.stinebaska.com Her main focus here in HK is family/children photos, but has experience of weddings both here and in Oz.

We had a small reception (after wedding at Cotton Tree Drive - lovely black and white photos outside Flagstaff House in the park etc.) at TOTT`s in the Excelsior Hotel - service was fantastic and I would wholeheartedly recommend.

Can anyone give me recommendations where I can get invitations printed in bilingual (English Chinese) in HK? And also to buy the favors and print the ribbons to go on the favors? What is the price range? I'll be going to HK and Guangzhou for a week or so. Is there much in price diff in HK vs. Guangzhou? If not, i'd like to get them done in HK.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated!

Congratulations, Oinky Bear! I hope my reply doesn't arrive too late. The prices for wedding invitations are 40-60% lower in Guangzhou yet you need to watch out for their quality and word spellings. In HK, they range from HK$ 15-40 depending on the design and paper used.

There is a good place for you to shop for all your wedding needs (photographer, invitation, gowns, favors, etc) and it's called the Beverly Commercial Ctr on 87-105 Chatham Road South in Tsim Sha Tsui. There are also wedding galleries/ studio near by on Kimberly Road that you may want to look into. Good luck on your wedding planning. Happy New Year!
