What's the best place to get games in HK? Is there a "mecca" of games store or equivalent chain to ebgames to order/pre-order games from?

No real equivalent to EBGames.
Try Oriental 188 Centre at 188 Wan Chai Road. It has plenty of computer game, video game, manga and anime stores.

I know how you feel. Despite HKs reputation as a technology mecca I have been somewhat disappointed on the computer hardware side as well. Higher prices than in the US and difficult or impossible to find quite a few specialty items which I can get online in the US.

Very surprising the gaming market isn’t very good it seems. Will investigate more when I get there. There is always ebgames.com if need be. Though shipping is a killer. Australian prices for hardware are also reasonable and most places ship oversizes: staticice.com.au

I think that consoles are (even) stronger here than in Europe and North America. Also handhelds like the DS are endemic. The PC game market is not as strong.
Amazon.com also ships books and games but same issue with shipping.
For books, Paddyfields is a better option as they are local to HK. Cheaper than Amazon. Ironically they take about as long to get you the stuff. My guess is they aggregate orders and get the stuff from the US in bulk, then sort, repack and send to the customers.

I would say one of the best places to get games is the Golden Computer Centre which is opposite the exit of Sham Shui Po D2. The ground floor mainly sells game while the floor below sells computer hardware.
