is there anywhere (on HK island) you can lay a blanket down on the grass under a nice shadey tree and have a picnic with friends and bubs? anywhere? anyone??

If you take the trail/road from Parkview towards Tai Tam there are a few picnic places in the woods. I think there are even barbecues.
There is a lot of greenery around the hiking trails, but most is very steep and/or overgrown. Still, there are picnic friendly spots here and there. For example on top of Violet Hill. You'd have to slog it up there of course but the route from Parkview isn't very steep.
I'd guess there are plenty of places on the Eastern side of the Island.

there is also a park on the top of the peak - i mean the very top - you have to drive up past the peak tram stop and then past a playground - lovely area. and of course as axptguy said - there all the bbq areas on the Tai Tam - Parkveiw trail..
