“Things to do” for kids?

ORIGINAL POST

How is the scene in HK for things to do for kids? Particularly in English. For example this past weekend we took our kids (5 year old and 3 year old) to Disney on Ice: Amazing Adventure and on Sunday morning to a Circus. I am sure this kinds of activities are available in HK but just wondering if they can be viewed in English?

Thanks.

You should have no problem with English or "language neutral" stuff to do. I don't know about shows but there are plenty of other things. Movies tend to be in English as well.

Some examples

- Ocean Park

- Disneyland

- Hiking (yes even for young kids)

- Going to the beach.

- Sailing if that's your thing.

- I believe the Thomas show is in English.

Thanks all. I was under the impression the beaches in HK were not safe to swim in?

Also is their a central place or ticketing website/service/magazine that lists kids shows? For example for Australia the two main sites are ticketek and ticketmaster so if you subscribe to their mailing list you get notified on various happenings. Including kids shows.

I booked a show from GoateeToni and all my kids enjoyed such a unique activity. letting kids experience snakes, lizards and others a hands-on way is alot of fun and they learn alot too.

Depends who you ask, and it depends on the beach. The South Side beaches certainly have a lot of people in the water, including myself, my wife, my young kids. We don't let them play as wildly as in the pool. We want to make sure they don't drink the water. Otherwise no problems. The water sometimes doesn't look terribly clean but it is the ocean so a certain amount of flotsam is to be expected I suppose. HK certainly isn't a tropical island paradise with crystal clear waters.

The EPD regularly tests for e.coli in the water. The results are posted here http://www.epd.gov.hk/epd/english/environmentinhk/water/beach_quality/bwq_home.html . It would be nice if they tested for other crap but with regards to getting sick e.coli is the biggest issue.

Do you know about URBTIX? It's the main ticket selling outlet in HK. Their website has synopsis of each show, but not sure if you can subscribe to get regular updates or not...

we took our bubs to repulse bay beach on the weekend. that was the first time he and i had ever been in HK water. i have to say i felt physically sick looking at the water but i looked around and there were hundreds of people and kids swimming! i love the beach and was torn as to whether to go into the water or not. i was desperate i s'pose!!!

I do understand how you might feel that way Sashimi Girl. Still, Repulse Bay is a somewhat enclosed body of water in a big city with a massive shipping lane offshore. With the terrain and rains you get a lot of vegetation and dirt run-off into the ocean. Considering all that I find the water remarkably clean. Not at all as dirty as one could probably expect. It certainly looks more inviting than many algae filled lakes I have swum in back in Sweden. I have never seen an oil slick at Repulse Bay or anything like that. Big city beaches will never be as clean as tropical island beaches.

I know it's only one data point but I have swum dozens of time at Repulse Bay Beach, including to the dive platforms. Never so much as an eye infection. Same with my wife and kids. Visible dirt is not the problem. Pathogens like e.coli are, and the level of e.coli is constantly being tested.

We all swim in the sea here too, and have done for 11 years, never had a problem.

Back to the original poster, sometimes they have ice shows here, most shows are in Chinese, but a few are in English but they sell out very quickly. Most theatre shows are in English, Around the World in 80 days is currently on again. Some kids shows like bilingual. the HK magazine found in many cafes/bars etc is free of charge and comes out each week with all the listings of whats on. The cinemas shows films in both languages, just make sure you pick the right one.

Apart from shows there are several museums, lots of sports and water activities, several ice rinks, bowling etc.
