Car Seat in HK - SOS!

ORIGINAL POST

Hi moms and dads,

I am planning to bring my 11-month old infant with me on a business trip to HK and was wondering if baby car seats are used at all. If so, which manufacturers are most commonly used?

Thank you very much!

First of all, all the taxis have seatbelts in the back. They do not, however, have ISOFIX/LATCH mounting. So you'll have to mount the seat with the belt method. No biggie but study the manual first and bring it with you. The taxi drivers tend to be quite patient but if you take more than a minute or two to mount/dismount the seat they might get a bit annoyed. I always ask them to start the meter when I start mounting but they still make much less when the car is not moving.

Car seats sold here are pretty much the same brands as anywhere else (Britax, Peg Perego, etc...), although Graco's presence is very weak compared to the US. I don't see the problem here. You can just bring your own seat.

Families with cars typically use car seats for their kids. We don't have a car, and when we use taxis we always bring our own car seats despite the hassle. Many receptionists at malls and shops will let you drop the seat(s) with them if you smile and ask nicely. However this is not guaranteed. Lots of parents do not use carseats, and happily have kids in their laps in taxis. This is of course very dangerous but I don't think HK law regulates the matter.

An alternative to car/taxi: public transport is extremely good in HK. There are frequent, clean and reliable trains, buses and minibuses all over the place. Given the much higher mass of these vehicles, you don't need to use a carseat.

Thank you so much for the response. This is very helpful to know. I've traveled to HK in the past but honestly have never paid attention to these things before I had my first. Much appreciated!

I do so recognize that phenomenon. It is amazing how one perceives things in a whole new light. :)
