Restaurants like One-ThirtyOne?

Does anyone know of other restaurants in Hong Kong that are similar to One-ThirtyOne? The price/quality does not necessarily need to be quite as high... I'm more interested in a unique experience that is outside the urban areas. Location can be anywhere in the SAR.

I've done the Private Kitchen thing in various Central/Wan Chai/CWB locations, but I have yet to be very impressed with the cuisine or ambiance (one exception: Da Ping Huo - Central).

Other somewhat similar restaurants that I know of are:

Black Sheep (especially the old location) - Shek O

Chez les Copains - Pak Sha Wan

Anthony's Catch - Sai Kung

Lucy's - Stanley

I need some ideas for a unique birthday dinner with my wife, and I'm striking out on FoodEasy and OpenRice.

Agree that One Thirty One is very good. Here are some suggestions for "rural" locations:

- Le Boat

- The Stoep (for casual beach dining)

- The Bay

- Cococabana

Otherwise, have you tried Le Marron private kitchen in Causeway Bay? Another suggestion is to hop on the ferry to Macau, have dinner at Fernando's and stay overlooking the beach at the Westin.

Le Boat is pretty special if the chef is cooking - but - a couple of times, the chef was sitting at the table next to us drinking with his friends and his minions were cooking in the kitchen - food was cold, service extremely slow - total crap if you are paying that sort of prices, so i would ask who is cooking that night and then decide whether to go or not.

I do really like Cococabana tho - i agree.

as for private kitchens - I really enjoyed Magnolia

BTW - where is One- Thirty one?

One-ThirtyOne is North-West of Sai Kung Town, in a small village called Tseng Tau, in an area (apparently) named Shap Sze Heung. They have a website that is spelled exactly how I wrote the name, with a dot-com at the end. Although it's quite pricey, the unique experience and excellent food more than make up for the cost.

Magnolia rocks! Although the seating situation isn't so conducive to a romantic dinner... But where else in Hong Kong can you get a bowl of seafood gumbo?

It's too bad there's nothing in Clear Water Bay.

Is Le Boat still open? It seems to be missing from the TopTables website...

oh dear, coming to think of it - i have not seen in the bay either recently... how do you "do" the whole dinner in 1-31 - guess you can drive but cant drink or can drink but cant drive. will they get a taxi to take you back to HK island after that?

Le Boat: They're not answering the phone number either. :-(

1-31: Sure, they can call you a cab if you're planning to get smashed... Apparently, it is even possible to get there by train+minibus, since it's not too far from the Ma On Shan spur line of the MTR (ex-KCR).
