thinking about getting one of these, but cost is about $1300. Anyone using this one or have any recommendations?

personally i'm using olevia since it has better support (firmware upgrades, etc) and works really good, only $1690. there are too many brands out there and not every one has the same picture and/or build quality.
best to "try" them out on a similar hdtv setup that you have to see how clear & user friendly they are. there were even newspaper reports a few weeks ago about a lot of these hdtv boxes being a fire hazard!

But can you use Olevia with Now HDTV service ?.
Or do Now set top box in addition to NOW HD channels also do the local free to air HD broadcasts ?.
Another to consider is the Eight with HD inside (just saw it online). More expensive though but i guess you can record and timeshit ala Tivo style...

Sorry I wasn't clear before. I have BOTH the Now cable box (old type) and an Olevia set top box as well.
Both boxes have different tv programs going thru them. The NOW has all the basic cable channels plus whatever pay-per-view you apply for, and the Olevia has all the free-to-air digital channels.
The concerns I had when making my decision to purchase the Olevia box was:
1) NOW HD box is also a "purchase", unlike the regular NOW box which is loaned to you as long as you're a Netvigator customer. Meaning I can still benefit from a full replacement in case of any problem with the regular NOW box anytime (no need to worry about 1 yr. warranty).
2) The Olevia box is extremely popular with many people, and they have one of the best product support for their set top box, the only other box I would even consider "equally" is MagicTV but their price is way too expensive. Sure there are plenty of HD set top boxes around, but many seem to be fly-by-night types of companies you never ever heard of!

Well, I got the NOW TV HD decoder which was installed for me .. and although the box is ok, the remote is absolutesh*te. I got PCCW over 3 times, and they used about 8 different remotes before one worked properly. Apparently it is a common problem.
My recommendation is to stay away, unless you are unable to connect up the decoder yourself or you do not want another box in your AV station (I have 7)

That's just the remote. You can buy a universal remote for anything from a few hundred to several thousand. As an added bonus it will work with your other stuff too.

Like I said before . . . . too many brands wanting to jump in on the HD bandwagon . . . .

It's been a year since this topic was posted - any updates on which HDTV box is good ? I am planning to buy one soon.

I d also be interested. I have no interest in Now HD's selection of 4 channels, also knowing they have no plans to add any new ones..
WHat kind of channels do you get with other boxes?

I have just had the Now HD box installed , the box was a free upgrade - some kind of special offer - the guy knocked on the door it seems they were doing the whole area. I have to say the User interface is so crap it makes trying to choose a channel so painful we have almost stopped watching now TV altogether. I am considering downgrading to the old box
