Todays HCMC offers most of what other 'world cities' offer - including alternate lifestyle facilities.
What you do lose from is the incessant noise, bad drivers - and how they endanger even pedestrians. FM radio offers poor listening. Cable TV offers 82 + channels including numerous English language sta channels.
There are even late issue movies in English, with VN subtitles.
You will lack for much, you just have to find it.
Within HCMC the Reunification Palace, HCMC Museum (actually very interesting), War Remnants Museum, numerous temples and pagodas all rate well.
A half-day trip out of town will take you to the Cao Dai Cathedral (be there by 12.00H noon for a wondrous sight).
South of the city is Can Tho and it's floating market.

Definately take a trip to the Cui Chi tunnels and the Mekong Delta. The war museum is interesting, but quite harrowing, one photo section we didn't let our young kids into, although they saw the rest.
If you're travelling with kids theres a great water park just outside the city.
