If I have an item shipped to HK from USA do I need an electrical adaptor compatible with HK? If so, is it better to get this shipped also or would I find one easily in HK. Thanks.

That very much depends.

- Some items can handle 110-120v (US) as well as 220-240v (HK). There should be an information label by the cable that tells you. If the device can handle both voltages, all you need is a plug adapter.

- If the item cannot handle 220-240v, you can get a transformer (not the same as an adapter). Get one in HK. Much more choice than in the US. I would not recommend doing this for items that use more than about 50 watts as the transformer would be large, noisy and expensive.

- Many electronic devices don't work well with transformers. For example speaker systems may hiss.

- You may also need a plug adapter to physically fit plug to socket.

You can find transformers in places like Wan Chai Computer Centre.
