mixing things with cow's milk...

has anyone tried mixing anything with their toddler's cows milk to help him switch from formula? i've read about mixing the milk with yakult, condensed milk, juice (?) - all of course make the milk sweeter and more palatable (just for the initial switch and then lessen the ratio down slowly). just for the record - my baby is completely off formula too so mixing with formula is not an option.

i really wouldnt. it would just confuse them. did you try to just give the baby milk? Does he not like it? Mine took to it quite quickly but we did have a few days when they did not really drink that much, so just stick with it. Certainly not condensed milk - have you seen the sugar content in that!!

yeah i know. it's all about adding some sort of sugar to the milk so i am quite reluctant. but i am desperate! it's been more than a week that baby is not drinking milk. he is sort of okay with a toddler milk from HIPP but it comes in a made up mixture already. i've tasted it and it tastes like vanilla flavoured milk and sweetish. we will be travelling a bunch in the next 6 months so i want to him to drink regular cows milk for convenience. i have 4 weeks till we go to phuket to get him onto cows milk!!!

As long as your child is eating planty of other dairy foods like yoghurt, cheese, fromage fraisr, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. They can get their calcium intake from lots of other foods too.

My kid never took to bottles or formula at all, and when she was a little more than one, I wanted to get her started on cow milk and off of breastfeeding. She hated plain milk. Cold, warm, room temp, sweetened, unsweetened... regular cups, straw cups, sippy cups... organic fresh milk, UHT boxed milk, several brands of each... we literally spent a month trying out combinations, and while she would reliably take one sip, she'd reliably push it away after one sip. The thing that finally worked for us was to mix 2 parts milk with 1 part orange juice and put it into a special insulated sippy cup. She still doesn't drink much milk, and six months after the first success with this we haven't had much luck lessening the amount of orange juice, but it has become her morning drink of choice, and often the first thing she says in the morning is "milk juice purple cup." She'll hang out with her Papa for an hour or so playing quietly and sipping away while he drinks coffee and gets online. The orange juice makes the milk curdle, which I find really really revolting, but she doesn't notice.

If your kid just can't stand milk, they can still get enough calcium, fat, protein and vitamin D from other foods -- our kid happens to love both cheese and green veggies [particularly dark leafy ones which tend to be good calcium sources]. Tofu is a good source of both calcium and protein, etc.

i think the major problem is switching from formula to fresh in a later age when the kids can notice the change of flavour. I switched my son's formula when he turned 6mnths old.... he obviously never noticed the difference and took the fresh milk and per his normal routine. The only thing i had to do was to mix a little boiled water in the milk starting with 50/50 ratio and gradually decreasing the amount of water till its only the milk....this is to reduce the chances of dihreah coz of thickness of fresh milk. He never had any side-affects from taking fresh milk at such young age, he is now 2yrs old and still taking a warm fresh milk sugar-free bottle 2-3 times a day as needed.
