my 14 month old LOVES babyTV (eggbirds especially!) but i obviously can't take that on the plane with me. i've bought him Sesame Street and The Wiggles, but he doesn't seem too interested. i would love to know what other toddlers are glued to so i can give them a go. i need some serious distraction material for some upcoming flights...

ours still liked Baby Einstein at around that age but started moving on to Bob the builder, Tomas the Tank Engine, Teletubbies, IN the night garden (it is the new Teletubbies from BBC) at around 18 months or so. No, they did not like Wiggles etc yet - dont really like it still... Try getting him Pingu - actually, yes! that was the one they LOVED at around 14 months (still do)

Little Einsteins and Dora. I personally think Dora is rather annoying but maybe that's just me.

In the spirit of full disclosure, my older one probably only watches 30 minutes of TV a week. 0-15 a week for the younger one, mostly 0 actually. Not that we're against TV, just that there always seems to be something else to do. I guess it's the good old Scandinavian/Lutheran heritage. ;)

that's great. on the other hand, i'm aiming for a full blown 18 hour TV bonanza for my little one! or whatever gets us to the states in one piece (as in our sanity). :p

if it is 18 hours you are after - DONT GO FOR DORA! axptguy - not just you - same here - every time she says "can you see the condor?" in that annoying voice I just feel like throwing either myself of TV off the balcony! Might not be so good to be stuck with that on the plane!!

I hear ya. The good thing about kids who don't get a lot of TV is that they tend to be even more mesmerized by it when they are watching. But that can backfire. Kids are predictably unpredictable.

***shivers*** There's also that annoying conceit that kids will actually learn some Spanish by watching Dora. Who believes that?!? Little Einsteins aren't free of teeth grinding moments either but they are much better.

Little Einsteins, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Bob the Builder, Thomas & friends, Fimbles are all great and it keeps our little one entertained. He's 27mos. now but still loves to watch them. I even have some on my PDA for "emergency" use - like when we're on long boring trips like going to Macau, etc. Works pretty good for us!

My 2 youngest loved Barney, Hi 5, the Wiggles, Fun song factory, and The tweenies. In fact they would still probably sit down and watch them given half a chance.

Baby Einsteins are painless for me - also Charlie and Lola, also any of the British TV from the 70s that you can get on Amazon - Bagpuss, Bod, Rhubarb, Chorlton and the Wheelies, but maybe that's just my age...

Just remembered another reason to dislike Dora. All the Dora DVDs we have force you to sit through the 5-6 trailers before the main menu. The menu function is blocked. There is the option of using chapter forward but still. Such an obnoxious way to design a DVD...

"what's wrong with barney??"

Barney is apparently backed by groups with strong religious ties. This rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Also he's really annoying (<- my opinion).

"anyway, i don't think my husband will let my son watch dora. it's for giiiiiiiiiirls! "

Somewhat tongue-in-cheek:

1. How is it just for girls?

2. Isn't he perpetuating stereotypes like this?

3. Haven't we progressed further in the whole equality thing?

4. My two girls will often play with toy trains and toy cars. Is this wrong too?

5. The big one: What exactly is your husband afraid of?

I'll put in another vote for Pingu -- particularly if it was something that I was going to also have to suffer through for 18 hours.

At least on the plane you can give the kids headphones. ;)

On this note I recommend the headphones with silicone plugs. Many of these come with plugs in three sizes. The smallest size plugs fit in a toddler's ears and since they are silicone they are nice and soft. You can find them for under 100 Honkies. Much better than headphones with a headband since those will always be too big.

Just buy a recordable dvd player and you can record 6 hr dvds off the tv.I do this all the time and it is a life saver when we are travelling, and also when we are on holidays and staying in a Hotel with nothing on the tv and we need some down time

I wouldn't worry if its boring for you, if the kids like it then....

We have a portable dvd player with headphones (the old fashioned type that go over their heads). Our toddlers love to wear them now as I wore them in front of them a few times and wouldn;t let them try. Now they think its like I've given them drugs when they get to use them.

Also, small puzzles and an etcha sketch are great for planes.

Happy flying!
