Hi
I am in the process of applying for a new australian passport for myself and my son. I have only lived here four months and dont know how long i will stay, months or years.
What are the implications of changing my home address from NSW to Hong Kong , thus changing my "residency". Does it affect anything like medicare or child benefits when i return home ?

We were advised to notify the Australian Inland Revenue that we had left Australia and were no longer residents for taxation purposes. This will not affect your Medicare status until you are out of Aust for quite a few years. Not sure exactly how many.
One thing you have to be careful of though is your taxation status. You have to be out of Australia for two years or more to avoid paying income tax there on income earned out of Australia. Best to get some 'legal' advice on that though.
As to getting the new passports, you will have to give contact address here in HK. You should also register with the Australian Consulate anyway - in case of emergency situations they know how to contact you.
Best get some

I don't believe this is correct. Once you leave Aust for an extended period and you can show you are no longer an Aust resident for tax purposes, then there is no need to disclose any foreign income earned.
