We bought a car a few months ago and want to take our 5year old out to a beach, either Kowloon side or HK Island.
If anyone has any recommendations of what beaches are good and also does not have a long walk from a carpark it's much appreciated. i know parking would be an issue during the day, but we intend on leaving early in the morning.
thanks!

Big Wave bay is our favourite, good facilities, nice restaurant on the beach, there's a park there too. Also Shek O, followed by dinner at the Chinese and Thai beach restaurant.
Clearwater Bay number 2 beach is OK, as is Stanley.
If you can manage a bit of a walk (45 mins), my 6 year old has done it, then Sai Wan beach is Sai Kung country park is lovely. Also Trio beach, park at Pak Sha Wan, then get the sampan. Also half moon bay, get the sampan from Sai Kung town.

Thanks cd. i think we will try out Big Wave first off. I meant to also ask about taking our baby (2 months) and if there is anywhere we can sit where it's coolish, a cafe perhaps.
I know i can go to Pacific Coffee at Repulse Bay whilst my husband and child go for a swim (then play tag, so i can have a swim!), but was interested to hear if there are any other places as well, hence the reason for asking about driving and parking.
thanks so much!

Big Wave bay has quite a large shaded are under the trees, there is also several shops to hire beach umbrellas from. Actually all those I mentioned have umbrella hire, and all of them have at least a kiosk that sells snacks, noodles, drinks etc, several have restaurants.

"None of them, they are polluted to hell!!!"
Exaggerated. There may be some dirt but a lot of that is "natural" dirt. Also they do check for e-coli regularly and the levels tend to be very low.

Nice beach down at South Bay Beach (Nam Wan Beach) off South Bay Road near Repulse Bay Road. They have some BBQ areas and also there's a bar/restaurant in the middle too. It's a great beach with not too many people. My nephew celebrated his b-day along with relatives and classmates there a few months ago.
Do go early or no parking spaces left on the street. It's a dead-end street and not much spaces to park. On the plus side, cops don't frequent that area as well so parking illegally for a few hours is fine too. At least it was for me! ;)

Thanks everyone for your input. I think Big Wave & South Bay Beach may be the ticket. We are early birds (still can't get used to the shops opening at 11am!) so it should work out great for us. It's much better at the beach in the morning anyway, before the heat of the day has really kicked in.

"Nice beach down at South Bay Beach (Nam Wan Beach) off South Bay Road near Repulse Bay Road"
Nam Wan = South Bay. It is one of three beaches in the Repulse Bay/South Bay Area:
- Repulse Bay Beach - The biggest and most easily accessible. Also the most crowded but there are some shops and there will be more if they ever finish the new shopping arcade.
- Middle Bay Beach - Half way down South Bay Road. Mostly known for being a gay beach.
- South Bay Beach - At the end of South Bay Road.
